For more than 30 years Sumsion Business Law has served its community by providing expert legal counsel to countless clients. In light of a recent tragedy in our community, we have taken time to reflect on the values that define us and have committed to increase our charitable giving in response.
Alex Lawrence Johnson, was an amazing member of our community and a close friend of the Sumsions. On June 5th, 2025, Alex tragically passed away from carbon monoxide poisoning while volunteering at a youth camping trip. His final act of service was a reflection of the life he led— one marked by compassionate service, generosity, and quiet humility.
He gave bone marrow to save a boy he had never met. He was a family man, and an amazing father to four wonderful children. He was the type of man that you could call at any time of the day and he would be there to help— whether that was helping a neighbor stuck in a bathtub, or helping move a 150 pound dog that had died. He was a little league baseball coach, gymnastics dad, and owner of a local landscaping business.
Most of all, he was a leader— in his family, to his friends, and throughout his community.
In memory of this amazing man, Sumsion Business Law is excited to announce the annual Live Like Alex Scholarship. The goal of this scholarship is to share Alex’s story and inspire others to live the way he did. This scholarship will support students who demonstrate compassionate service in their everyday lives and who stand firm in their values, just like Alex did.
At Sumsion, we believe that these characteristics are essential both in education and throughout life.
The Live Like Alex Scholarship is available to any full time student attending an accredited 2-year or 4-year college in the United States. We hope students will apply who demonstrate leadership, community service, integrity, and dedication to family. These characteristics can be manifested in a variety of ways; there is no one right answer. We want to know who you are and how you serve. All majors are welcome to apply.
When you apply for the Live Like Alex Scholarship you can choose between two options. The first is an essay submission. For the essay you choose one of the two prompts found under the scholarship page and write a 600-800 word essay answering completely.
For the video submission you can also choose between two prompts, but your answer should be in the form of a 2-3 minute video. This video should be posted to a social media— TikTok, Instagram Reels, of YouTube— and include #LeadLikeAlexJohnson.
Regardless of the option you choose, your entry should be emailed to scholarship@businesslawutah.com. In your email you should also include your full name, address, phone number, school, major, and expected graduation date. For 2025 all submissions are due June 30th.
Neither option is better than the other, and no prompt is superior either. Choose the one you feel you will be able to answer the most thoroughly and have the greatest success at.
From the entries one student will be chosen to receive a $2000 scholarship to help them work towards their educational goals and to encourage them to continue to live a life full of service like Alex did.
